Enforcement of Egg and Poultry Marketing Standards

The Scottish Government employs a small dedicated team of Egg Marketing Officers to enforce the European Union legislation covering the marketing of eggs.
The Eggs and Poultry Unit exists in order to:
- Enforce European Union (EU) Egg Marketing Standards Regulations and Hatching Egg and Chick Regulations at all marketing stages up to but not including retail level. This involves unannounced inspection of premises, produce, packaging, labelling and quality control systems.
- Collect egg samples on behalf of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) for analysis under the National Surveillance Scheme. This is reflected in agreements between The Scottish Government , the VMD and the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
- Advise Agricultural Staff Headquarters and policy divisions on all matters relating to the Scottish Poultry Industry.
- Advise the Food Standards Agency and Local Authorities on egg and poultry related legislation on request. Accompany Trading Standards Officers and/or Environmental Health Officers on inspection of eggs at retail premises on request.
